Historical notes on the Marching Band’s Abrams Award

The Shulasmith Simon Abrams Awards are awarded annually to two outstanding marching band members. This award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated tremendous leadership, complete unselfishness, and personify the tradition of the Pennsbury Marching Band.

The person who receives the honor has his or her name added to the list on a plaque in the display case of music program awards outside the auditorium at Pennsbury High School. Their name is listed annually in the Pennsbury Marching Band Indoor Concert program.

The Shulamith Simon Abrams Award is given to a member of the Pennsbury Marching Band since it was first instituted in 1979 to honor an outstanding member of the band who had demonstrated "good citizenship, perseverance, and dedication," among other positive qualities.

The origin of the award goes back to the beginnings of the Pennsbury Band Booster organization itself. In 1970, nine years before the first award was given, Jack and Shulamith Abrams founded the Pennsbury Band Boosters, the volunteer parent association that has provided immeasurable support to the music program across a broad front over the decades since.

Mrs. Abrams died in the spring of 1978. A year later, the award was instituted in her memory as a way to acknowledge a member of the band whose qualities were an echo of her own. Jack Abrams presented the plaque and a $100 savings bond to McBlane.
